Mold is a nasty health hazard, and an unsightly fungus that eats into textiles. It’s not easy to get rid of, and very often it’s best to throw away affected items and start again. But for those expensive floor coverings, you’ll be asking “how do I remove mold from carpet?”
Cleaning mold from carpets: the need to remove and prevent return
To do a professional job you’ll need to use the right products to clean and remove the mold from your carpet, and then prevent the mold from returning. The thing about mold is that it’s really bad for your health, and the spores are easily breathed in… and easily spread. So safety must be your first concern at all times.
Now we’ve got the health warning out of the way, here are the seven steps to follow when you find yourself in a position where you need to ask “how do I remove mold from my carpet?”
Step 1: Protect yourself and the environment
Wear goggles, a facemask, and protective clothing. Keep the windows open, but shut all doors to the room to help prevent the spread of mold spores.
Step 2: Dry the carpet
If the carpet is fitted, pull the carpet away from the floor and make sure that an area about two feet around the affected carpet area is lifted. Remove padding and lining, and use a dehumidifier to help speed the drying process.
If it is possible to take the carpet outside, leave it to dry thoroughly in the sun and open air.
Step 3: Remove mold from the carpet
Use a stiff brush to remove mold from both sides of the carpet, and then use a vacuum, and finally steam clean.
Step 4: Start the mold prevention process
Use a high quality anti-mold spray on both sides of the clean, dry area, allowing it to soak into the textile. Scrub, and leave to dry.
On the floor underneath where the carpet was, apply an anti-fungal solution and allow to dry.
Step 5: Repeat step 4
Repeat the anti-mold and anti-fungal treatment described in step 4.
Step 6: Dehumidify for 48 hours
A dehumidifier will ensure that the carpet and floors are properly dried and free from mold spores.
Step 7: Clean up, replace the carpet, and prevent mold from reappearing
Clean all equipment, and refit the carpet.
Now, keep rooms well ventilated and use dehumidifiers to reduce air moisture. Never use carpets in bathrooms, and dry bathmats thoroughly after use.
