When Mrs. Andrews noticed a rash in neat lines on her daughter’s arm, she was scared that her home might be infested with bedbugs. But try as she might, she couldn’t see any. Eventually, a neighbor suggested that she might have carpet beetles, nasty little bugs that feed on textiles and fabrics and hide in carpets among other places.
While they aren’t dangerous to humans, carpet beetles can cause a large amount of damage in the home. You’ll want to get rid of them, and these four strategies to exterminate carpet beetles will help you do so:
1. Use an insecticide
By using an insecticide, you can eradicate a large infestation of carpet beetles. With ingredients consisting of deltamethrin, bifenthrin and cyfluthrin, you will be certain to exterminate carpet beetles before they take over your home sweet home.
2. Use Boric acid
Boric acid is not as potent as an insecticide, but still rather messy. You can find it at your local pharmacy, so it’s easily available. Sprinkle it over your infected carpet, wait several hours and vacuum. You will be amazed by the effects. You can also use boric acid on other fabrics, such as upholstery and curtains, because yes, you’ve guessed it, carpet beetles don’t just live in your carpets.
3. Use diatomaceous earth
This technique to exterminate carpet beetles is perfect for those who are more eco-friendly. This natural product quickly kills larvae by dehydrating them. In a similar fashion to using boric acid, sprinkle some diatomaceous earth over the infected areas and hey presto, no more carpet beetles.
4. Use fog
Fog technique is rather limited, as it can only be used on adult carpet beetles. But by spraying flying insect fogger, you can effectively exterminate carpet beetles and prevent eggs being laid.
Carpet beetles may not be harmful to humans – save for an unsightly skin rash – but they can destroy carpets and other fabrics. Using the above strategies to exterminate carpet beetles will do the job, but please be careful where there are children or pets present.
